GSTR-2B reconciliation with TallyPrime
Match your GSTR-2B JSON with the purchase bills and notes in TallyPrime, see every ITC mismatch, and book what is missing without entering it twice.
The GSTR-2B check reads the GSTR-2B file you download from the GST portal and matches every supplier invoice and note against the purchase entries in TallyPrime. You see what matches, what differs and what is missing, with the ITC on each. Missing bills, supplier notes and reverse charge bills can then be booked in TallyPrime, and nothing booked from here goes in twice.
Before you start
The Balancely connector is running and TallyPrime is open with the company.
Your suppliers' ledgers in TallyPrime carry their GSTIN. Matching is by GSTIN, never by name.
The GSTR-2B JSON file for one month, downloaded from the GST portal.
Only Owner, Admin and Accountant roles can use this page. Viewers cannot open it.
How to download the GSTR-2B JSON
- 1
Sign in to the GST portal and open the Returns Dashboard.
- 2
Pick the financial year and the month.
- 3
Under GSTR-2B choose View, then Download and the JSON option.
Check the file against TallyPrime
- 1
In Balancely, open Accounts and then GSTR-2B check.
- 2
Choose the company at the top under Company. The return month comes from the file itself.
- 3
Drop the file on Upload your GSTR-2B. It is read in your browser.
- 4
The check starts on its own. It reads your suppliers under Sundry Creditors, your purchase vouchers for the financial year, and your debit and credit notes if the file has notes.
- 5
Read the results in the tabs. Use Check again after you correct something in TallyPrime.
Bill numbers are compared in one form, so INV/045 and inv-45 count as the same bill. Totals that differ by ₹1 or less are treated as equal.

Read the results
The tiles show the count and ITC for On the portal, Matched, Mismatch and Only on portal, plus the number skipped. Each tab lists the documents, with a search box.
| Tab | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only on portal | On the portal, but no bill or note in TallyPrime has that supplier GSTIN and number. | Select the ones to book here, or book them by hand. |
| Mismatch | Found, but the total, date or number differs, it is entered more than once, or the supplier ledger has no GSTIN. | Read What differs and correct the entry in TallyPrime. Then choose Check again. |
| Matched | Same supplier GSTIN and number, with the total and date agreeing. | Nothing. |
| Only in books | Bills and notes from registered suppliers, dated in the return month, that are not in this GSTR-2B. | The supplier may not have filed yet. Follow up with them. Notes in your books are only listed when this GSTR-2B has notes of that kind. |
| Skipped | Documents that are listed only and not booked from here. | Read Why skipped and handle each one by hand. |
A bill with the same supplier, the same total and a date within three days, but another number, shows under Mismatch as a likely match. It is never booked on its own. If it is a different bill, choose Not the same bill. Where several bills fit, pick the right one under Bill in TallyPrime and the document stays under Mismatch, matched to that bill. Not the same bill or None of these moves the document to Only on portal, ready to book.
What is skipped and why
Documents where ITC is not available. Book them by hand if you still need them in your books.
Amendments of invoices already reported. Correct the original bill in TallyPrime instead.
Imports of goods, including from an SEZ unit. Book them from the bill of entry.
ISD credit passed on by your head office. Record it with a journal.
Credit and debit notes under reverse charge. Adjust your reverse charge entries by hand.
A document listed twice in the file is counted once.
Book missing bills, notes and reverse charge
- 1
On Only on portal, tick the documents to book, then choose Continue to book.
- 2
Under Ledgers to post to, choose a purchase ledger for each GST rate, within state and other state, and your CGST, SGST, IGST and cess ledgers. Reverse charge bills need their own purchase ledger and the tax payable ledgers. A Round-off ledger is needed only when a value is rounded.
- 3
Under Suppliers, choose Use a ledger in TallyPrime, or Add as a new supplier. A new supplier goes under Sundry Creditors as GST Regular, with the state taken from the GSTIN.
- 4
Each row shows Ready or Needs a choice with the reason. Fix what it asks.
- 5
Choose Book with the count, for example Book 12 bills in TallyPrime. Up to 500 entries go in one batch. A reverse charge bill is two entries.
A progress card then shows what was saved, what failed and anything already in TallyPrime. Your ledger choices and supplier picks are remembered for the company in this browser, so next month needs fewer clicks.
What happens in TallyPrime
| On the portal | Booked in TallyPrime as |
|---|---|
| Supplier invoice | A Purchase voucher. The bill number is the invoice number, and the tax is exactly as filed. |
| Supplier's credit note | A Debit Note. The purchase and its input tax are reversed. |
| Supplier's debit note | A Credit Note on the purchase side. The purchase and its input tax go up. |
| Reverse charge invoice | A Purchase voucher without tax, marked reverse charge, and a Journal that debits input tax and credits the reverse charge tax payable. |
Several GST rates on one invoice are posted on separate purchase lines, each with its rate.
The narration says which GSTR-2B month the entry came from.
Entries already in TallyPrime are never changed or deleted. Only new vouchers, and new supplier ledgers you ask for, are created.
Each document is booked under a key made from the supplier GSTIN, the number and the financial year. A document booked from here before is held back. If you deleted it in TallyPrime since, the row says so and it is booked again.
Each entry saved in TallyPrime counts towards your plan's monthly entries, and a reverse charge bill counts as two entries (the bill and its tax journal). New supplier ledgers created here count too. Reading and checking do not.
Download the results as CSV
Choose Download as CSV to save the tab you are on, for example "GSTR-2B Sep 2026 - Mismatch.csv". It has the portal's number, date, taxable value, each tax head and total, next to the supplier, number, date and total found in TallyPrime, with the notes. Send it to a supplier or keep it with your working papers.
After a check, bills you read on Purchase bills also show whether they are in GSTR-2B.
Common questions
How do I reconcile GSTR-2B with Tally?
Download the GSTR-2B JSON from the GST portal, open GSTR-2B check in Balancely, pick the company and upload the file. It matches each document with your purchase entries in TallyPrime by supplier GSTIN and bill number.
How do I match GSTR-2B with my purchase register?
The check reads the purchase vouchers, debit notes and credit notes in TallyPrime and lists each portal document as Matched, Mismatch or Only on portal. Purchases of the month that the portal does not have show under Only in books.
Why does my ITC show a mismatch?
The total, date or bill number differs between the portal and TallyPrime, the bill is entered twice, or the supplier ledger has no GSTIN. The What differs column gives the exact reason and both values.
Can it book missing purchase bills in Tally?
Yes. Select documents on Only on portal and book them as Purchase vouchers, Debit Notes, Credit Notes or reverse charge entries, with the tax exactly as on the portal.
Will it create duplicate entries?
No. Each document is booked under its own key, and one booked from here before is held back. For bills only, a bill number TallyPrime already has for that supplier is also refused and counted as already in TallyPrime; notes and reverse charge journals rely on the key alone.
Why are some invoices skipped?
Documents with ITC not available, amendments, imports, ISD credit and reverse charge notes are listed only. Each row says why and what to do instead.
