GSTIN checker

Check a GSTIN for typing mistakes before it goes into your books. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How a GSTIN is made

Fifteen characters, each with a job.

The first two digits are the state the business is registered in, such as 27 for Maharashtra or 29 for Karnataka. The next ten characters are the PAN of the business. The 13th counts registrations under that PAN in the same state, starting at 1. The 14th is Z for a regular registration, D for a TDS deductor and C for an e-commerce operator.

The 15th character is worked out from the other fourteen, so a single typing mistake almost always shows up in it. That is the check this page runs, the same one the GST portal uses.

Questions about GSTIN checks

Does this tell me the GSTIN is active?

No. It checks that the GSTIN is written correctly: its state code, the PAN inside it and its last character. Whether the registration is active, and in whose name, is shown on the GST portal’s Search Taxpayer page.

TallyPrime keeps every entry for a party with a mistyped GSTIN out of its GST returns, under Uncertain Transactions. The input tax credit on those purchases is then missing from GSTR-3B until the ledger is corrected.

No. The check runs in your browser. Nothing you type on this page leaves your computer.

Every GSTIN on a new or changed ledger, on a purchase bill read with AI and in an Excel import is checked the same way before anything reaches TallyPrime, and a party already in your books with a wrong GSTIN is named after an entry that TallyPrime cannot place.

Every GSTIN checked before TallyPrime

Balancely runs this check on every ledger, bill and import, and posts your entries straight into TallyPrime.
